Jalaun, November 21
Information is an important part of everyone's life. And this was
realized by Kunwar Bai of gram panchayat Khairi, block Kaunch in
Jalaun. A member of the panchayat, Kunwar Bai is also one of the
key figures in the formation of the Panchayat Soochna Kendra
(Panchayat information centre) in the village, which is
enlightening the village folk about their rights.
The Panchayat Soochna Kendra in Khairi has been functioning from
quite sometime and has been successful in helping the people. It
was Kunwar Bai's brainchild, who herself wasn't aware about the
functions and the power given to the Panchayat. She attended a few
meetings on this issue and then joined hands with some other
members to open up this centre. The centre has a core committee,
which has 9 members including 2 women. It is open for the
villagers three days a week. On Sunday and Wednesday, Rambabu
Panchal handles it while on Mondays, its Kunwar Bai who performs
this task.
With a woman sitting at the centre to clear all queries, a large number of women from the village have come forward to know more about a lot of issues. These range from health, agriculture, panchayat and its role and other similar issues. And not only
that, they have started demanding for books on folk songs, story books and also newspapers to keep their knowledge updated. Kunwar Bai has also initiated several literacy camps in the village. A lot of women, who are keen to get literate, are
promoting this idea amongst others too and the number is increasing with every passing day. An anti-tobacco campaign for the Kendra under her leadership, and a poster on its ill effects also started the hardcore gutkha addicts were put up by the womenfolk. This resulted in 6 people quitting the habit immediately.
The growing popularity of the Kendra not only in the village, but the entire block has surely placed a halo on Kunwar Bai's head, who now beams with joy looking at her baby growing with every passing day.
