TRIPTYCH - Padmini NatarajanIntroducing herself, Padmini says
"I grew up in Madras, Hyderabad and Bombay. Being a sickly child, books were my constant companions. I had an arranged marriage, two kids and am celebrating my fiftieth, my husband's sixtieth birthdays and our 28th Anniversary this year. Over the years I have developed a great interest in drama and act in serious roles though comedy is my forte. Along with scripting skits I write poetry, fiction, first person encounters. I was encouraged, even goaded, to write, by my husband who is my editor and critic. Tend to be verbose and get on to a soap box easily.
Have been part of an all womens drama group and don both male and female roles. I am member of an International Women's Association and volunteer with a suicide prevention group. I was introduced to Internet writing by Sulekha.
I have lived in Mauritius for ten years and have been a globe trotter." |

ONE
A child
born in affluence
loving parents
doting relatives
swaddled
cuddled
indulged
in everything
beribboned
embellished
in silk, satin
gold and gilt
lettered tutored
reading, perusing
books and comics
picking with
dainty disdain
finicky taste
gourmet food
telephone pizza
restaurant fare
ices and chocolates
fancy school-bags
filled break-boxes
quality pencils
paper and texts
movies and CD's
computers, holidays
in hill resorts
entertainment
shopping
the picture ideal
of little
Miss Muffet.

TWO
She is born
whimpering
in shanties
to parents
labourers
settled
in a sari cradle
carted in arms
sitting in rubble
picks up herself
to fetch, carry
the family burdens
at a tender age
oiled plaits
long skirt
is ma's assistant
at chores
domestic help
eating leftovers
of another's table
off to school
bare feet, slate
chalk pencil
to sit on the floor
and learn her
vernacular alphabets
returns to watch
in open mouth
awe celluloid
stars, dance sing
has rare visits to
temples, weddings
makes the life of
Miss Tuffit.
|
THREE
It comes
into the world
an accident
borne bundled
in clan arms
grey rags
barely visible
but soon
becomes savvy
to professional
expertise
sack on shoulder
prong in hand
learns
street smartness
hits with élan
the lucrative
dump cans
picking, prodding
in elusive search
for gleaming trash
that can convert
into hard cash
no school, no bed
no food filling belly
but bits, scraps
puts together
cinema money
cheers for free
roadside players
real-life drama
this is the
existence of
Miss Ruffit.
