Duty And Its Result
By- B.Upadhyay

In previous writing we knew about the significance of Geetha, and now we can share some ideas on duty and its results. It has been explicitly described in Geetha---do your duty and never desire for the results.

When man has a right to engage himself in Karma (activities), he has a right also to the fruit, no one can deny. But the doer can, out of his own free will and determination, refuse to be affected by the result, whether it may be favorable or unfavorable. The Geetha shows the way, "do and deny the consequences."

The desire for the result of your action is sign of Rajoguna, the giving up of action since you can not benefit by the fruit is a sign of Thamo-guna. To engage oneself in Karma, to know that the result will follow and yet not to be attached to it is the sign of Sathwaguna.

Geetha says-if you desire the fruits of Karma then you get born again and again , but if you give up the desire you are liberated from the cycle of birth and death. The practice of this type of renunciation ends the state of bondage. The goal is Karma, not Karmaphala.

The karmayogi who has learnt this secret of Karma combined with Phalathyaga (no desire of result) should have no desire of the attachment of the fruit. But those who say--this Karma is mine, I have done this for you and the best results are from my efforts---are the ones who always desire for results. Lord Krishana advises that one should rise above this kind of mentality.

The Lord has said in the Geetha, refuse the fruit that is to say-the deed yields result itself, while the doer should not desire the result. If Krishana's intention was to say that the doer has no right to the fruit, he would have said, it is fruitless. So if you desist from Karma, you will be transgressing the Lord's command. This will be a serious mistake.

If you have an eye on the fruits of your actions, you are sure to be affected by worry, stress and anxiety. It is not that easy to be least concerned about the results, it will take us years to develop this habit. But once it is developed you will enjoy eternal peace and a life of never-ending bliss.
