Rajasthan’s Sandstone Art Flourishes in India, Abroad

Sandstone industry in Rajasthan is thriving as demand for artifacts made out of it continues to grow in India as well as abroad.

A long stretch on Jaipur-Agra National Highway has virtually turned into a live-exhibition displaying artistically sculpted and engraved articles of sandstone where artisans can be seen working.

The pink-colored stone, considered better than marble, mainly owes its export demand to its long lasting shine and a smooth finish.

"This stone is used for export purposes especially for temples. These are considered better than marble and is usually exported," Sitaram Saini, a contractor said.

There are almost 10,000 sandstone quarries in and outside Rajasthan, a major revenue earner giving employment to about 20,000 workers.

"This is mainly for export. Only 25 percent is used in India the rest is exported. In this we do not get the margins we deserve," Jai Singh, red sandstone trader said.

Sandstones reserves in Rajasthan are estimated at 900 million tons and spread over Dholpur, Karauli, Hindaun City, Sikandra, Bijolia and Jodhpur.

Besides Rajasthan, the brilliance and beauty of Jodhpur sandstone is well known around the world. The stones are in great demand and are exported to countries in the Middle East, Europe, Korea, Australia and Japan, among others. (ANI)
