Entertainment and Patriotism

Hassya Kavi Sammelan, “Hansi Ke Favvare” (Fountains of laughter), a presentation of three famous poets from India, Satyanarayan Maurya, Om Vyas Om and Gajendra Solanki was hosted by Atlanta chapter of SEWA International on July 16, 2005. The program attracted Hindi lovers across Atlanta. "Rajniti bhi, angare bhi, Hansi ke favvare bhi" best describes the proceedings.

Baba Satyanarayan Maurya

The mood for laughter set in with the light conversational banter by Baba Mourya and the audience bonded effortlessly with him. Starting at 7pm, the White hall auditorium at Emory University thundered with laughter and applause till 12 o'clock in the night with the wholesome entertaining performance by the three poets. Each one of the poets represented a different genre in himself: Parody, Satire, patriotism and Intellectualism, covering all walks of life.

“Chahe Mercedez chalao ya Ford, par driver nahin kar sakte afford” -Mouryaji captured everyone’s hearts with his light comparision of life in the US and India. Babaji’s performance as kavi with sharp sense of humor and satire, as a painter with artistic stroke and a singer produced a lively atmosphere. Deploring the state of affairs in the country today, Baba said...

Ghotale ki chat chatpati suhati hai hamen,
baat ulti sheeghr hi samajh main aati hai hamen,
nit naveen ghotale ka hota roj nashta,
wo masala wo khabar se hi hai apna vasta..."

And for the regretaable attitude of people towards sensational news, Baba had to say:

chaap-2 dawoodon ko mahaan kar diya,
aur kalankon aaya-zon ki zubaan kar diya,
manveeyta ke baanh yon nahin marodiye,
aap buddhi, khaaiye, bichaiye wa odhiye,
sewa ko marod kar na patr yon chalaiye,
ho sake to bhartiya bhavna jagaiye

commenting over the politicians and the consequent state of affirs in the country, baba conveyed his thoughts...

bech diya adhikar udyogon, khanij aur khadanon ka
aise ae gantantr tumhara swagat hai abhinandan hai

Gajendra Solanki

Gajender Solanki’s forceful voice with an equally effective message left the audience spellbound and willing to listen to him to the end. His poems glorified the bravery of Shivaji Maharaj, Rani Laxmi bai, Mangal pandey and Veer Savarkar, drawing numerous applauses from the audience and conveying a message of patriotism & “Desh Bhakti”.

"Ma, tu hanswahini hai pradeep gyan dayini hai
ma pyare bharat desh ko tu aisa vardaan de
pyare bharat desh ko tu aisa vardaan de
har ghar aangan main khushion ke deep jale

-Gajender solanki

Om Vyas

The mere appearance of Om Vyas - Kurta, Tilak & Choti and a face with a questioning large eyes - was enough to send ripples of laughter in audience. His poems contained a plethora of critical remarks mixed in delectable satire to make audience think about their culture and heritage. Om Vyasji presented a vivid picture of our society and poked satire at the evergreen Pati-patni relationship, leaving the audience roaring with laugher and applauses.

"ma chinta hai, yaad hai, hichki hai
ma, bacchey ki chot par siski hai
ma chulha, dhuaan, roti aur haath ka chala hai
ma jindagi ke kadwahat main amrit ak pyala hai
ma tyag hai, tapasya hai, seva hai
ma phoonk se thanda kiya hua kalewa hai..."

- Om Vyas

Nearing end of humorous evening the mood slowly changed to patriotism when Gajendra Solanki ji sang Vande mataram, while Baba ji etched a beautiful emotive painting of Bharat Mata, which was auctioned on the spot.

SEWA Atlanta's event was more than a mere evening of laughters or a nostlgia filled trip to the motherland. The proceeds from the event are donated to agencies in India to fund educational and literacy projects in India. An artistic event like this is not held that often in Atlanta as compared to the star packed bollywood nights or bollywood singer shows. The ideology of Sewa International is “Sevaji parmo Dharmah” and “Nar Sewa, Narayan Sewa” – to serve humanity is to serve God.
