A brief excerpt from the translated article by Sahar Syed. Sahar Syed is doing masters in Computer Science from Karachi.
The title of this article, Insaan, Zindagi, Saneha aur Sabak... 'Man, Life, Tragedies and Lessons'
The hustle bustle of life keeps a man busy to such extents that he sometimes doesn't even find time for himself. The seeking of basic necessities is all that his life revolves around .It becomes very difficult to detach oneself from the bond of these materialistic things. Sometimes, though very rare, when he gets some time ...a time for being alone, he finds himself absorbed in the events of past.
All seems to be like fiction. A flash back comes to the mind, of people whom he had known... the loved ones... the people without whom he thought, (how wrongly that) ... he won't be able to survive...but he moves on...to the next phases of life with or without them.
It is very difficult to decide whether the life itself is too unkind or it is all a result of the selfishness of man...it is however a question searching for a legitimate answer that whether man spends life ...or life spends him.
The fact is that the man comes in this world alone... and leaves the same way...alone!! But a part of everyone remains in this world.... In form of dreams, memories... and thoughts in the minds of their love ones.
I am at a hotel in Cincinnati, OHIO. I come across a news item. It was told that Mike donated more than half of his liver to save his brother's life...and has selected Mount Senai hospital (considered best for liver transplant) at NY for this purpose.
The risk involved in such cases is usually one percent or less. Mike was operated by few of the best doctors in one of the best hospitals. But after the surgery his condition deteriorated and he died a few days after the surgery. Everyone was shocked. His death was somewhat mysterious. A health commissioner in NY held the hospital staff responsible for all this.
According to him the patient was not looked after properly. Moreover he was mostly kept under the care of inexperienced doctors.
The health commissioner also revealed that Mike's wife was asked to get the postmortem conducted in the same hospital in which he had died i.e. Mount Senai hospital.
However If the postmortem was not conducted by the same hospital, the cause of death would have been known to be a result of some bacterial virus instead of a faulty post operative care by the hospital.
I haven't been able to get the news out of my mind and the reason was obvious. A year ago I, myself had faced a very similar tragedy at Lahore (on April 26, 2001). My mother had got same sort of treatment at Punjab institute of cardiology. Lack of professionalism, irresponsibility, and internal conflicts of staff are the issues that people are facing there.
I am not saying all this because my mother died there. But what I am writing hereexactly what I saw and experienced too. The atmosphere of indifferent behavior, unhygienic surroundings and totally uncooperative attitude was found there. On top of it, there is little care and value of life. My mother's operation was declared successful but she gave away her life in the Intensive Care Unit after 11 days.
I protested as much as I could, thinking that it might make some difference in bringing some discipline and responsibility in the hospital. But perhaps this is not how we react to the tragedies.
Everyone only talks, makes plans...and that is all we can do. We don't have the skill to implement what is right. Even after fifty years, our human development is equal to none. We are pushing more people towards poverty line but not pushing them towards safety net.
To accept our mistakes and learn from them requires courage, acceptability and atmosphere of change, which we don't have. What we have is irresponsibility towards every aspect of life and that is what is growing.
