Nafisa Joseph, Miss India 1997

Memories came flooding back when I heard the news about Nafisa Joseph. I remember I had crowned her winner of the Femina Miss India contest in 1997. She went on to become First Runners Up in the Miss Universe Contest. I was in a state of shock and utter disbelief to hear that she had taken the extreme and irreversible step of ending her young life. Nafisa never seemed to be the vulnerable kind. She seemed confident and extremely poised. In fact, she seemed to have all the attributes that make a woman truly beautiful. She was physically beautiful of course, with her gorgeous figure, her height, chiseled bone structure, her poise and elegance. She had brains and inner beauty too – goodness of heart and spiritual power.

She came across as a caring, gentle and soft spoken person. I was also impressed by her love for animals and her compassion for the underprivileged. What struck a chord in my heart was her simplicity. Despite winning the coveted Miss India title, it seems she hardly had glamorous ambitions and ideas.

I was taken up by her simple hairstyle. Instead of an elaborate hairdo, her hair seemed as if she had just washed and blow dried it. Later, she told me that she preferred the natural look. When I asked her how she had achieved her stunning figure, she said she owed it to regular visits to the gym. She was a disciplined and strong willed person.

I find it so difficult to believe that this talented young girl of 25, on the threshold of a successful career, became emotionally disturbed and desperate enough to end her young life. According to news reports, she wanted to marry and felt let down by the man she loved. I wish she had realized that no man is worth giving up one’s life. A beautiful woman like her, who had already achieved fame and recognition, could have said "goodbye" to Gautam Khanduja and "hello" to somebody else. I wish Nafisa had found that inner strength that God gives each one of us to cope with adversity.
