Even good guesses do not reveal how much money top stars earn per film today. But it is certain that top heroes like Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan – not to mention Amitabh Bachchan – earn crores of rupees per film. Is this why the younger stars like Saif Ali Khan are taking bigger breaks and choosing their films with more care?

Doing every film which comes his/her way is no longer a good career option!

Grab opportunities when they come, for they may not knock again – this is often the funda which underlines the lives of many successful people. Actors Govinda and Karishma Kapoor worked on the basis of this theory and accepted every film which was offered to them. In fact, Govinda was a prototype followed by most leading stars of Bollywood. Especially, beginners like Esha Deol, Priyanka Chopra, Arjun Rampal, Ajay Devgan and even Hrithik Roshan – accepted the wishy-washiest roles offered to them and stood by in disgust as they flopped one after the other. Only in recent times have stars become clever and choosy.

Saif Ali Khan is a star in demand after his success in Hum Tum and Parineeta, both of which he carried to success on his own performance to make the cash registers ring at the box office. Though he was desperate for work earlier, now he says that being choosy will help his career!
Shah Rukh Khan, most of whose films have been successful at the box office, set the trend by getting into production, presenting live shows in India and abroad and employing others to produce or direct his work. Hrithik, learning his lesson after many of his boy-meets-girl films flopped without even a sound, refused sundry film and concentrated on Koi Mil Gaya became a superhit and put him in the starry firmament once again. Aamir Khan has always been choosy. But after the mammoth success of Lagaan and the break up of his marriage and he began his relationship with Kiran Rao, assistant director of Lagaan, he became even more selective about the movies he accepted. The Rising, which will be released this year, is his only release during 2005. Salman Khan too, has had one or two releases during 2005.
Hrithik Roshan became wiser after many flops

From the looks of the scenario, stars seem to be extra careful in choosing their assignments. Is this because they are earning more money per film than ever before in the history of Bollywood? Perhaps. But there are other reasons too, according to observers. Many stars agree that they are selective because of their experience of signing up for ‘losers’ which affect their careers in the long run. Hrithik is a prime example of this theory. After the run-away success of Koi Mil Gaya, he was inundated with offers from producers who wanted to make quick bucks by hiring him for their love stories. Hrithik, sensing that his money-making times had come, signed up every film in view and soon, people began to say that he was a flash in the pan star, good only for one film. Even the films made by senior producers like Subhash Ghai and Yash Chopra failed to give him the much-needed boost.

So Hrithik stayed back and took a serious look at his career. He began to refuse films and took on only a few that would help his career to be on the upswing again. This happened when Koi Mil Gaya became a hit. Then again, he took a long break to train for the sequel to this film Krissh, being made now. He trained in martial arts in China and took his time doing his next film. Hrithik also stars in Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Akbar-Jodha, a historical film and Yash Chopra's Dhoom 2!
Shah Rukh Khan too, is making fewer films

Shah Rukh Khan was clever to start with. He chose his films with due consideration and had fewer losers – which is why he is called Badshah Khan or King Khan. Almost every film he made succeeded at the box office. Still, he tread the film world carefully, joining hands with Karan Johar to produce Kaal, producing his own films Main Hoon Na and Paheli with different directors. “I am unemployed right now,” he says jokingly, because he is taking it easy after his back surgery, “I have three films which will release only next year. These are Karan Johar’s Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna; Farah Khan’s Happy New Year and Farhan Akhtar’s Don for which shooting is yet to begin. I will do only three films a year from now onwards, unless someone gives me an extraordinary script that blows my mind!”

Less is more! Even a needy star like Saif Ali Khan says so!
Akshay Kumar, who became known as the Khiladi of Bollywood, signed as many films as he could lay his hands on and became the butt of many jokes as a B-grade film star. He did quick damage control by stabilizing his personal life by marrying Twinkle Khanna in time and chose his films carefully. He is today more choosy than ever before in what he does. “Excessive work loads are no good for stars,” he says, “To do a few good films is better than to make money doing trash.”
Saif Ali Khan, now one of the top favourites after the success of Hum Tum and Parineeta, has the same view. “I was desperate to get work not so long ago,” he says, “But now I know I can’t do work which I am sure to regret. I would like to do one film a year.” Industry experts don’t believe him because Saif is yet to make his fortune. Moreover, he has to pay alimony and child support to his divorced wife Amrita Singh. Female stars like Rani Mukherjee, Preity Zinta and Priyanka Chopra are also chanting the mantra of doing ‘a few good films’ rather than take on too many assignments.
Are all these stars truly selective or are they choosy brats because they have made their fortunes? That’s the question fans are asking!
