Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, two twenty nine year olds from London, have the fashion world talking about the duo's success in such a short period of time. No one had heard of Marchesa until February of 2006. They have dressed award winning stars such as Renée Zellweger, Cate Blanchett, Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz and Felicity Huffman, for their red carpet walk. They made their debut in New York Fashion Week of this year. Their line, Marchesa, was bought off by Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus in February before the duo even presented a single dress to the invitees at an exclusive party in the Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center in New York.
Their textile designs are sari inspired silks with brocade borders and emberoidered flowers. Chapman and Craig have divided Marchesa into three divisions: the Marchesa Notte - the lowest priced range between $800 to $1200, the Marchesa Designer range is between $2,400 to $3,900 and the custom-made creations for celebrities range is the highest priced. Each collection consists of sleek fitted flowing evening gowns in rich silk with gold / silver metallic work, mostly strapless. Material used to construc the gowns is heavy with lining and the weight of metallic work helps drape the dress well. The two designers have provided a clever tool to the wearers of their gowns. A stretch band made of net hugs the body of the wearer from underarms till the lower thighs. Corset iron wire bone shapes the waist and torso and flattens the stomach.
