Big
By -Shubhra Krishan
At breakfast
we fight
He pushes his chair away
leaving the cornflakes to sulk on the table
I abandon my muffin too
Out on the road to work
There’s a major jam
at the first traffic light
two cars have crashed
they’re trying to fix the blame
At first, I fret. Then,
through the windscreen
and through the misty windows of my eyes
I notice the mountains
I’m suddenly tuned to their silence
clearer than Whitney Houston in my car
Their big, U-shaped bodies are so close
I can run my fingers across their shoulders
bury my head inside their hollow womb
then I think of the ocean
with its heavy, still waters
And the sky with its blanket of quiet air
as the traffic light turns green
I’m thinking of me
This marvel nature made
with all of these
ocean and earth and sky
then why am I so small, so small?
