The 645D uses the PENTAX-original 645AF lens mount with an extra-large CCD image sensor being developed by Kodak giving a tentative resolution of 18.6 megapixels.
Pentax presented a digital version of its popular 645 format camera for professional studio, landscape and fashion photographers at Photo Imaging Expo 2006, Asia's largest annual photo and imaging merchandise fairs, held from March 23 to 26 at Tokyo Big Site in Ariake, Tokyo. The camera was initially introduced at PMA 2006 held in late February in Florida, U.S.A.
The 645D uses the PENTAX-original 645AF lens mount and so will be compatible with Pentax 645 lenses. It will use an extra-large CCD image sensor being developed by Kodak, world’s leading supplier of image sensors for medium-format professional photography, giving a tentative resolution of 18.6 megapixels.
In the marketplace the 645D will be competing against products such as the high end Hasselblad's medium format DSLRs with resolutions of 22 megapixel and the more competitively priced Canon's EOS 1Ds Mark II with a resolution of 16.7 megapixels.
Prices and further information for both cameras have yet to be announced.
