Safety Strategies

Be prepared, plan before a violent incident.
- Know where the telephone is located.
- Think about different ways to leave home.
- Talk to your children about safety planning and create a code word to signal the need to leave quickly.
- Make arrangements to have a place to stay with a trusted person.
- Keep the following copies or originals in a safe, accessible place in case you have to leave quickly:
* birth and marriage certificates
* immigration papers
* articles of sentimental value
* social security cards
* passports
* driver’s license or indentification card (I.D.)
* phone numbers
* credit cards
* spare keys
* money
* insurance cards
* important mail
* medicines
* lease
* bills
* police reports
* car titles
* medical reports
* mortgage
* protective order
* check books and check stubs
* During a violent incident
- Call 911, if you feel you are in danger!
- Avoid areas with possible weapons
- Avoid rooms with few exits, for example, the kitchen, bathroom, or garage
- If possible, escape through an exit and yell or make loud noises.
- You don’t have to live with domestic violence. There are people who can help!
