For all those who loved Kavita Chaudhry’s popular Indian TV sserial, ‘Udaan’, which spoke about the journey of a woman cop, here’s something you would love to know. Chaudhry’s protagonist was none other than her elder sister, Kanchan, who is one of the firebrand cops in the country today.

And ten months ago, Kanchan Chaudhry Bhattacharya became the very first woman Director General of Police of the hill state of Uttaranchal. The second IPS officer in India after Kiran ‘Crane’ Bedi and the first IPS officer of Uttar Pradesh, Bhattacharya’s ten-month tenure in the state has been a non-controversial one. Known for her softness and her strictness alike, Bhattacharya is just a simple woman when not in the uniform. But once the khaki garb takes over, she is a tough cop. Tougher even than the men around, but only when it comes to dealing with crime.

She has had a number of firsts to her credit. Three decades ago, she became the very first IPS officer of UP. Other firsts in her list include first woman Additional Director General of Police in Uttaranchal, first woman Inspector General of Police (Organisation and Management) in UP Police and also, the first Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Range of Bareilly in UP a decade ago. But this is not all. With a persona like hers, Bhattacharya is sure to have many more firsts in her list, which keeps growing.
“I was told that the path to integrity and honesty is not a smooth sailing one, yet I chose to walk on it and here I stand,” says Bhattacharya. The glow on her face and the warm smile is unlikely a police officer, but rather of a simple homely woman. Incidentally, the simplicity can be attributed to the fact that Bhattacharya belongs to a rural background and has had a tough life before getting into the police force.
Her career graph too has been a challenging one. Bhattacharya’s first charge in the uniform was as the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Malihabad in Lucknow district way back in 1975. Famous not only for mangoes but also for goons, Bhattacharya managed to catch 13 dacoits in a year alongwith her team, which also included Makhan Singh, who was killed in an encounter. The other significant cases in her kitty include the gruesome murder of National Badminton Champion Syed Modi in 1987 and also, the various crimes in the banking and public sector companies, for which she was even pressurised at times.

Her compassionate side is reflected when she tries to help women victims of domestic violence, helping the elderly with just small gestures or even rescuing stray children of a daroga at Dehradoon recently. She was given the police medal for meritorious services in 1989.

But success has not gone into her head. According to colleagues and juniors, Bhattacharya is a softy at heart, who does not fail to share a smile with her collegues. “She is tough when she is on the job, but otherwise, she is very compassionate,” they say. Some even feel that with her around, they feel more responsible. “Her sensitive attitude is transported onto you if she is with you,” they opine. For many women who are in the police, Bhattacharya has served as a role model. And that’s not all. Even the men in khaki look at her for inspiration and courage.
She is happy that her own example has helped in inducing more women into the police service. As the president of the All India Police Women Association, she has also helped in bringing a lot of respect for the women in khaki.
With just two months away from completing an year as the DGP, Bhattacharya does feel the pressure mounting on her. But the charismatic smile and the strong persona will definitely let her sail through. After two months, SAWF would bring back an exclusive ‘A life in the day of Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya’, exclusively for its readers.
