Meenakshi Gupta

Meenakshi Gupta lives in Ontario, Canada and is currently pursuing her Diploma in Business Administration with a major in Marketing. She has always been a writer at heart with a passion for the arts. Amidst going to school fulltime, part-time work and struggling to get into the advertising field, she also manages two fortnightly columns and contributes to various publications on a freelance basis. Ever been in a situation where you’re stuck at home because of really bad weather? Living in Toronto has taught me a lot of things…most importantly, how to enjoy a Snow Day! Canada is widely known for its notorious winters. During the months that its snows here, there are often days when the weather gets so bad that it is impossible to do anything else than to hold yourself hostage indoors. With the past couple of winters that I spent here, I learnt to enjoy these bad weather days and also to make the most of them.

1. Be Informed!

One of the first and foremost things to do is to keep yourself informed of expected weather changes in your area. Be it rain or snow, if its going to be so bad that you can’t leave the house, then you will be much better off knowing what to expect. I always like to keep a close eye on the weather forecast, especially for the coming weekend. Weekdays don’t leave me much choice if I have to get to work. Unless I can manage a day off to escape the dreadful weather, I always leave home a little earlier that usual aware of the fact that I’d be stuck in traffic for a pretty long time! Weekends are a completely different case. Being forewarned of bad weather expected during the weekend helps me plan and prepare myself for a warm, cozy evening in the comforts of my own home.

2. Stock up on Movies

If I’m going to be stuck indoors for the entire weekend, I stock up on all the movies I love and enjoy and gear up for a wonderfully relaxing day in front of the telly. I like to take a trip to the library or video store and pick up a couple of movies I know would keep me entertained all day. Put on your most comfortable pair of flannel pyjamas, grab a big bowl of popcorn and a bag of those yummy munchies, wrap a warm woollen blanket around yourself, and with the remote in your hand and a stack of your favourite star’s movies, you are all set!

3. Pamper Yourself

Knowing that I won’t be able to do much of anything, I like to find this as an excuse to give myself a special treat. Get out those wonderfully aromatic bath salts and fill the tub with warm water. Add your best bubble bath, light few scented candles and feel your tensions just soak away. After a nice long body soak, put on a soft silky robe and give yourself that most needed french manicure and pedicure. When all is done, make yourself a huge big sundae with all your favourite flavours and trimmings, put on that favourite CD and enjoy!

4. Throw a Slumber Party!

This is the best excuse to throw that slumber party you always wanted. Call your best girl friends over, pick up a bunch of ‘chick flicks’ and catch up on all that gossip! Prepare loads of fun foods and get drinks that everyone enjoys. Between munching on yummy treats, story telling and playing ‘Truth or Dare’, you’ll never know where the day went!

5. Catch up on Reading

Sometimes, I just enjoy spending my day curled up on the couch with a good book. Get something that is a page turner so you never want to stop till you reach the very last one!

6. Catch up on Work

Okay, okay…this may not be a good way to spend your weekend but if you’re loaded with work and have nowhere else to go, why not? I find that I always spend most of my Mondays and Tuesdays catching up on work left over from the previous week. Without much else to do when I’m snowed in, I like to use this time clearing up my logs and getting ready for the week ahead. I find that it keeps me more organised and relaxed if I’m not rushing to meet deadlines.

7. Oh the wonderful WWW!

So when was the last time you sat in front of the PC and just browsed the internet? There are tons of new sites coming up everyday and most of them are really fun. Catch up on the latest news, views and events taking place. Log on to entertainment sites and find out what’s happening in the lives of your favourite celebrities. Not interested in gossip? No problem! There are lots more to do online, like downloading music, playing games and learning new skills without having to get up from your seat.

8. Cook like a Chef!

When stuck at home with bad weather, make your kitchen your fort. Find that recipe your mom gave you a long time ago that takes 3 hours to get done and start working on it! I like to make a big fancy meal with all the side dishes and a perfect dessert and enjoy it over a nice glass of wine with that special someone!

9. Get Cosy…

Put the phone off the hook, turn off the lights, light those scented candles and cuddle up with that special someone! This is a nice time for the both of you to spend some quality time with each other. Listen to music that you both love and solve puzzles or play board games till you are bored silly. Then choose a favourite dish and cook together. Chances are by the end of the day, there’ll be much more cooking than just the meal!

10. Sweet Slumber…ZZzzzz!!!!

Last but certainly not the least, catch up on all the sleep you want!
