Amitabh Bachchan

Tracked by - Vijainder K Thakur

63 years old Amitabh Bachchan is unarguably, one of the most versatile and talented actors in the Indian film industry today. Despite the fact that Amitabh has a daunting record of hit and super hit films, I am inclined to believe his prodigious talents have been underutilized due to the imperatives that drive the Indian film industry. Amitabh himself cannot escape blame for being frequently indiscrete when picking his films; he has been guided by his own personal ambitions and needs more than a steadfast urge to advance Indian cinema.

Born on Oct 11, year 1942, Amitabh is the elder son of Harivansh Rai Bachchan, an outstanding Hindi poet, and Teji Bachcan. He entered the film industry rather late in 1969, at the age of 27, in a film called Saat Hindustani which no one that I know of has seen. The film's only claim to fame is the fact that it was Amitabh's first film. Despite a notable performance in Anand (1971), Amitabh did not acquire star status until his angry young man performance as a police officer in Zanjeer (1973).

Following Zanjeer there was no looking back. He soon rose to super stardom and dominated Indian cinema from 1975 to the late 1980's with performances that ranged from brilliant to run of the mill. An injury during the sets of Coolie in 1988 took Amitabh out of the limelight for some years.

He bounced back from his injury but met limited success. He struggled during most of the 1990s. His foray into the corporate world with ABCL was an absolute disaster. However, Amitabh simply refused to quit. Today he is not only a busy actor but a superstar.
