Must be something to do with the American culture which tends to be too hung up on brand names and be self-conscious even when adventuring out to foreign lands.
In that respect Aussies I must say are true adventurers. They tend to go back-packing carrying with them only the most basic necessities and truly enjoy roughing it out in a foreign land with a foreign culture. In fact, thats one reason why India and Nepal are some of their favorite destinations.
Aussies also tend to have a great deal of awareness of more cultures. This comes from genuine interest that they take in getting to know and experience cultures other than their own. Their geographical proximity to Asian countries and their cultural proximities to the West also works to their advantage.
