Karthik Krish comments : Does Jog not employ both the Ga's in unison? Then does KomalGandhar-Shudh Gandhar confluence interpreted as vivadhi swaras in Hindustani tradition also? Also, the usage of Sudh Nishad rarely,is it used only in arohan or avarohan and is it used in unison with Komal Nishad? The reason for this doubt is that in Nattai Komal nishad and shudh nishad are used in unison with Komal nishad being the vivadhi swaras as shatshruti dhaivatham and it used in rare phrases in Nattai. It will be great if u can kindly clarify this doubt of mine. Finally, there is a raga called Bhanumanjari which used SR3G3MPN2S(Sa-komal gandhar-shudh gandhar-m1-p-komal nishad-shudh nishad)!!
The author responds: Karthik,
The two gandhArs are used together occasionally but only in an avarohi prayoga, as in a slide of the type G-g, not the other way (g-G). As for the nishAds, perhaps you may wish to give the feature another read - they are not used together side by side, that is, in phrasings such as n-N or N-n. When the two nishAds are employed, the higher shade accrues in Arohi and the lower in avarohi sangatis, eg., P N S" n P. These days most people sing Jog with a single (komal) nishAd. Regards,

Dr.K.P.Paranjape comments : Dear Mr.Parrikar, Many thanks for writing such informative articles. I was thoroughly impressed by the masterful & expert selection of excerpts of musical renderings of yesteryears which are hard to listen to nowadays.I am interested in reading Hindustani Sangeet Padhdhati by Pt.V.N.Bhatkhande. Can you please help me?
MANMEET SINGH GILL comments : WHAO!!! I'm just in awe both of the research but really the introduction of these great masters. Too bad, one I just got back from India and two, it is so hard to find the CDs of these masters in India, forget about getting opportunities to learn from them. Anyway, thanks for a refreshing afternoon. You've taken the pains to add the sample recordings and I think that's what make your articles powerful. Well I just bought a new sarangi from India so I'll continue checking this site for inspiration. Take care Rajan and may the forces be with you!
Vivek Shah comments : Thanks for the kind words about one of the greatest sarode exponents alive.

I am an avid student of Hindustani Classical music and am based in New Jersey. About 5 years ago, I stumbled across your article on Raga Bhairavi while looking for songs based on this raga on google. Ever since then, I have read every single article you have written on this web-site.
I have gleaned immense knowledge from these expositions and have found gratification, from the point of view of both a student and a lover of Hindustani music. The clips, particularly those with Pandit Ramashrey Jha Ramrang's explanations, are absolutely priceless. I wish I could archive these articles and clips so that I could have access to them forever.
This particular article shed light on a raga (Jog) that I am absolutely in love with. Thanks once again for truly enriching my life.
Regards, Hameer.
