Corinne Templeman comments : I am attending my grand-niece's first rice ceremony this Sunday, June 22, 2003. I would like to bring a special gift and wondered if you could give me some guidance. Thank you.
JP Alcasid comments : I am attending a first rice ceremony for my friends' first daughter and would like to bring a gift. What is traditionally given for such an occasion?
Krishna Chakravarty comments : Gold, money, books, silver or steel utensils are the best gifts for this occasion. I would stick to money because what good is gold for a little boy. Utensils will be a difficult choice because no one is eating in thalis and katoris these days.

Rajan comments : Hello Culture Keepers, This practice in Hindu religion and may be many others, since ancient days is based on a scientific observation. This is to say that those thinkers had found out the true biochemical fact. The phenomenon is that the liver in infants will be lacking in the requisite enzymes to break down the complex carbohydrates like starch and sugars ( cane sugar). It is only after 4 to 5 months that these enzymes are found in sufficient quantity that the infant can effectively digest the starch in Rice. If rice is given before this period they will have not only indigestion, but also may have diarrhea or be starved of energy in spite of feeding. Hence six months waiting is made as a ritual. Todays Pediatricians call it as a 'Infant feeding protocol'. That is all the difference. Similarly there are many rituals who have a scientific basis, not just false belief or a blind custom. The lesson is that it is wiser to follow our ancient rituals rather than defying them, like some Un-phads. You may contact me on my Email: drtknag@yahoo.com
