Laurie Frisch comments : I was saddened to see "surrogacy" and reproductive tourism presented as a positive thing. There is a young people's science fiction book "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. This book makes it clear that "birthmother" is the job title of the lowest status position in society. Yes, you can get poor or naive women to sign up for such a thing. Using a woman in this way is not much different from the sex trade. I feel sick seeing Indian women used in this way, especially because as a United States citizen I know it is people from my own country who are probably buying the babies. These people have high expectations of the human being they are ordering built for them. Even if the woman who gestates the baby is OK with it, the child produced may be discarded or abused if he turns out not to be what was "ordered". After all, there are plenty of orphans already that are available and the buyers could just snatch one up...but the whole point is to get a child that is PERFECT.
I know there are pressures on the poor...if they produce one baby for customers, maybe their other kids can go to college - or EAT. But what a sad, sad thing for the baby treated like a commodity.

Tracy Thornton comments : I just wanted to say that although it is not right to put these women thru the grief of carrying and delivering a baby and having to give one up, they would not seem to do so if they didn't feel like they were helping someone in need or desperately need the money themselves. As, for citizens in the U.S. building a baby to be perfect is not the reason for not adopting, it is about having a baby of your own blood and with a price tag over here of $35,000 or more it is not so feasible for a middle class family to afford that. I think this service benefits both parents and surrogate.
My husband and I are headed to Dr. Patel's in Anand next week to start our journey of having a baby together, we are very nervous of the outcome for everyone involved, and I hope in the end that everyone comes out blessed with what they are looking for and not a lot of heartache on either side.
Adopting a child in this country is as much as going to India to use a surrogate, so other than the worry and it being so far away during the long wait thru pregnancy, what is there really to lose from our point of view?
I am 40 years old and we were going to get in vitro over here and freeze our embryos until we could save enough money ($35,000) to conceive. Just the in vitro and freezing would have cost about $14.000. For another $8000 we have two trips to India and a baby in hand at the end. Sounded like our only real hope. I am so glad I found the Dr. on MSNBC web page, the only answer to our prayers.

S. Webber comments : In response to Laurie Fisch... I am from Australia where the surrogacy laws are draconian and also illegal in most states. We would gladly adopt a child or a family groups of children in a heartbeat. IF Australia didnt have some of the worlds most stringent adoption laws also.
How can you accuse almost everyone of wanting a "perfect" baby? We are ging to India to visit Dr Patel in 4 weeks time and I can tell you right now, IF there was another way, we wouldve chosen it.
PLEASE tell me though, WHAT is the difference between Indian women deciding to be a surrogate, as opposed to American women doing the same thing? Frankly my husband and I dont care wether our future child or children are "PERFECT" or not. We respect and love the woman who is choosing to help us. Our child/children will ALWAYS know where they have come from also.

E. Nieves - NY - USA comments : I think that if the ladies who choose to have children for childless couples are willing to do this surrogacy then it is just wonderful. It helps everybody involved in one aspect or another. The money that the women make can feed, clothe and educate their own children. We pay American women to be surrogates and the money is just too much and too stressful for the parents-to-be. I think that what Dr. Patel has done is quite remarkable. The surrogate women are kept in 24 care for the entire pregnancy. They are healthy and well cared for ladies. A doctor is giving them regular checkups. Everything is under a watchful eye. In America, are the surrogate women watched that carefully? NO, they are not. I have friends who have and are going through all sorts of processes and procedures to have their own children and it is a very sad and emotionally difficult time. If people are intent to have their own biological children, they should be able to have surrogacy as an option. If couples wanted to adopt a child, they have that option too. But, even to adopt is extremely costly and you are made to wait a long time too. Not to mention that the people who I know who are working so hard to have their own biological children are people who really deserve to have a child. They are loving and wonderful people.

Tara comments : Listen here to all the people that wrote the negative comments....one claimed that the babies would somehow be abused or neglacted or even orphaned if they weren't perfect...are you kidding me? Women like myself that cannot have a child would do anything for one no matter the perfectness of the child. I have researched this for a long time and am just starting on the journey of surrogacy in India. The women make enough money to improve their lives greatly and they want to help people. They aren't being caged or locked up or have a gun to their heads. I will forever be in my surrogates debt. I have had a stillborn baby and 4 miscarriages, i have applied to adoption agencies and it takes forever. And that's after mounds and mounds of paperwork and the cost is over 30,000 usd. So for the comment about the orphans out there just waiting for homes...don't get me wrong there are thousands, but the laws, money, ect make it very very hard to get one. DONT BE SO JUDGMENTAL UNLESS YOU HAVE BEEN THERE AND CAN SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE......
Kirti Limbachiya comments : God, that is if you believe in God, only gives us problems that we can handle. And they are based on our own Karma. Having a child is a wonderful thing and I can understand the pain for those who are not as blessed. I wish India had better regulations so poor people would not be compelled to surrogacy options for financial considerations.
Having said that, there are many options for Surrogacy in India. Dr. Patel is probably the last on the lis one should consider. She is extremely unprofessional and has been proved to be negligent in the court of law - the negligence that caused loss of life. While some may question about the case with Dr. Nayana Patel, would you be willing to risk your own life? And just FYI, she tried to bribe the officials to get that case removed but fortunately, this time around she was not as lucky.
There are many other options besides Dr. Nayana Patel that are much more safer and ethical. May god bless you all with a little bundle of joy.
