I HAVE BEEN READING YOUR ARICLES REGARDING THE COMPARATIVE STUDIES OF RAGAS.I AAPRECIATED YOUR GESTURE IN PROMOTING OUR MUSICAL TRADITIONS TO THE YOUNG THINGS. I WOULD LIKE TO ADVISE YOU THAT IF YOU COULD DEMONSTRATE EVERY RAGA REGARDING THEIR ASCENT, DESCENT, CATCH PHRASE, AND AALAP IN YOUR OWN VOICE. AND PLEASE GIVE THE VERSES OF STHAYE AND ANTRA ALSO. YOU ARE DOING A GREAT JOB. BUT PLEASE GIVE THE DEMONSTRATION OF EACH RAGA IN YOUR VOICE. I AM WRITING EACH RAGA WHICH IS GIVEN IN YOUR ARTICLE. YOU CAN CUT DOWN THE RECORDING S BUT DEMONSTRATION OF EACH RAGA IN YOUR OWN VOICE.AND IF YOU COULD REPLY ME IT WOUD BE HONOUR FORE ME.
SINCERELY

Sam comments : There is an excellent Bhinna Shadaj in the piece titled "Shrishti" - by Pandit Hariprasad Chowrasia in his Eternity album.
I am an avid follower of Hindustani classical music and also your articles. These articles are not just entertaining, I believe they have great archival value. There can not be a better way preserving and emanating this ancient tradition. My best wishes to this highly commendable work. Shekhar.
PS:
I am wondering in collaboration of with any taal vidwan do you plan to come up illustrious articles explaining the nuances of laya shastra ?
With all your authority in the field could you pursue this matter with vidwans like Pt. Arvind Mulgaonkar. His encyclopedic book 'Tabla' deserves to be expanded with audio visual clips.
Congratulations on another superb article. Your endeavours in bringing Hindustani classical music to a wider audience are of great merit and i wish you all the success in the world.
I'm having a little trouble accessing some of the audio clips in the previous installments. The jogkauns_speak feature compels my real audio player to look for additional components which sadly cannot be found apparently. This the only case of such trouble that i have encountered. And some other earlier audio segments seem to be dead links, if i recall correctly the Bhimsen Joshi Yaman.
If you could shed some light on these points I would appreciate it very much.
The author responds: Thank you very much, Mr. Khalidi, for bringing these to my attention. The links were working fine at the time the articles were first published. They have now been fixed. If you find any other broken links, we would appreciate your bringing them to our attention. Regards, Rajan P. Parrikar
The author responds: Mr. Khalidi, we have combed through the entire database of clips and have fixed the referring links. It is not clear to us why those links evaporated from our directories - there were about 30 of them missing out of a total of over 2000. If we have missed any, and you come across any residual errant links please let us know. Again, thank you for alerting us. Regards, Rajan P. Parrikar
Praveen Hanasoge comments : Sanjeev Abhyankar's presentation of this raga is superb - I think this audio tape has been released by Fountain Music Company of Pune.
Hopefully being a bong I will be able to attract your attention even more :) I was wondering whether you plan to write articles on Kalavati and Hamsadhwani in future.
With regards,
Saikat The author responds: Dear Saikat, No articles on Hamsadhwani or Kalavati are planned. These pentatonic melodies are rather straightforward. I could have included Hamsadhwani under the "Shankara" article; I do not now recall why I did not. Be that as it may, you will find these ragas addressed indirectly through recordings in the Vijaya Parrikar Library. Warm regards,
Thankyou for this beautiful article on Bhinna Shadja. I have always enjoyed reading your articles. It is very helpful.
I was wondering if there is anyway to get the lyrics to the songs rendered by Kishori Amonkar. My particular interest is in the raags Bhinna Shadja and Rageshri. Others are also very good but right now these would be of great help.
Thanks,
Ishita
Ayub Aulia comments : Pandit ji Adaab! I am friend of Jyoti Pande. I have been reading your articles with great interest. Akhtar and Zakir ali belong to Sham Chaurasi gharana, they were younger brothers of Nazakat Salamat and did not belong to Gwalior. Also Thumri Yaad pia kee aai is in Raag Lumma (a kind of Maand) and not Bhinna Shadaj as per Ustad Ghulam Haider of Qusur gharana. Pls comment. Any sample of Hindoli by Ustad Amir Khan Saheb? Regards, AYUB Aulia
The author responds: I didn't say Yada piya ki aayi was in Raga Bhinna Shadaj. In light music, raga association has to be implicitly understood with the qualifier "based on." That is to say, the thumri draws from the framework provided by Bhinna Shadaj but it should not be taken as a representation of the raga itself. The Rajasthani Mand is quite different and has a distinguishing signature. Bade Ghulam Ali Khan may well have been inspired by Mand and called what resulted from his ruminations "Lumma" but that is merely a game of labeling. One can always tweak a swara here and there and plant a name against the ensuing melodic landscape. The basic melodic theme of Yada piya ki is essentially drawn from Bhinna Shadaj. As for your other question - there is said to be a private recording of Amir Khan rendering Hindoli. I shall post it upon acquisition. Regards, Rajan P. Parrikar
Manjiri Asanare-Kelkar comments : Dear Mr. Parrikar, Is there any raga named Mangal Kanada? My guruji Pt. M.S. Kanetkar (Disciple of Late Ustad Bhurjikhansaheb) is trying to get some information. Will your guruji Pt. Ramashray Jhaji can guide us on this subject. I will be obliged.
The author responds: "Mangal Kanada" has been mentioned by Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande in his 5th volume of Hindustani Sangeet Paddhati. - Rajan P. Parrikar
I heard Pandit Jasraj's Bhinna Shadaj where you have mentioned that the bandish seems to be a Sugharpiya bandish. I learn from Ustad Shaukat Hussain Khan of the Agra Atrauli gharana and we have the same bandish but it is a Praan Piya bandish. Aajhoon na aa ye baalam vaaa, tarap tarap jeeyaa jaaye. You may want to cross check with a few references on this. Also want to thank you for this treasure trove of information, it is very helpful to a student like me Regards, Rujul Pathak
Ananya Jaidev comments : Dear Mr. Parrikar, This article is very informative and well written, but I do not know how to play .ram files, so I am unable to listen to all the different tracks on the page. Perhaps somebody could help me with this. Windows Media Player doesn't recognise or play .ram clips.

Dr. Kashyap comments : Any membership for listening the full raag instead of small ram clips on sawf library ?
Rajendra Ramesh Mantri comments : Respected Rajan Parrikarsaheb, I am Marathi writer and publisher. I love classical music. For many years I have been listening and recording Sangeet Sareeta (A radio programme on Vividh Bharati at 7.30 am.) But I assure you that from tomorrow onwards I need not record it ! I located your site at 9 am while surfing. Last 3 hours I am enjoying Bhinna Shadja. (However most of the clips I already knew. In fact, that does not undervalue your efforts). I learn vocal from Meheboob Khan for a year and Basuri from shekhar sarangdhar. I play on harmonium & tabla which I have. I am sure you must have taken a lot of pain in structuring this site. My best wishes to you and your team. Regards, Rajendra Mantri, 8, Shridhar, Hanuman Road, vileparle (east), Mumbai 400057 Tel 26144015/ 98212-70066
Tanuja Sane comments : Mr Parrikar can u tell me why this raag is known as bhinna shadja?
Steve Comins comments : Your comments on Ali Akbar Khan "potty throne", "baba's boy" seem totally inappropriate. Khansab's devotion to teaching music is beyond your grasp, that's for sure. Otherwise keep up your work.
Narendra Shenoy comments : I've been reading your music archives and I must express my awe at the depth of your knowledge and the intensity of your passion for Hindustani Classical music. May your tribe increase!
Manivel Sahayam comments : You have done a himaliyan service to the lovers of Indian classical music.Playing the ascent, descent and pakads can be easily done as there is lot of info on them online . What we need is the alaaps and the chalans(chaals as Jagjit Singh calls itwhen tutoring a student) of each raag. Jagjt Singh does an excellent demonstration of raag yaman kalyan chaals which is on line. How about a CD or DVD on alaaps and the chalans?
