Elizabeth Dandy was born in Salzburg, Austria. She studied at the Benedictine Abbey school at Frauenworth, Bavaria, and after graduation studied music, singing and dramatic arts at the Music Academy, Salzburg and foreign languages at the University of Perugia, Italy.
She performed in leading roles as opera singer and actress at the Salzburg Landestheater and the Opera of Beuthen-Kattowitz when her theatrical career was halted by the approach of the Russian Army and members of the cast fled west. After brief military training in Hessen, Germany, she was assigned to serve at the military headquarters at Padua, Italy. No transport was available, so she had to make her way alone until she succeeded in stopping a munitions truck headed for Padua. Travelling on that overcrowded truck with soldiers riding toward the front was unforgettable. In Padua she served as German-Italian interpreter and social secretary to the military commander, major general Vichitil until the capitulation of the German army in the spring of 1945. Her return was likewise unforgettable. After detours via devastated Germany she managed to climb into a coal shed of a locomotive until fellow “travellers” advised it was safe to come down. Nobody recognized her so covered in soot was she. Many adventures lay ahead of her before she finally made it home to Salzburg, hidden in a potato sack, and so happy that it was an American that flung it open.
She then worked for the International Refugee Organization until emigration to Canada.
She worked her way across Canada as multilingual secretary and translator, handling German, French, English, Italian and Russian. She emigrated in 1962 to the USA and worked in this same capacity in New York.
Elizabeth inherited her many gifts from her mother, and since her retirement was able to cultivate and devote her time to put these gifts to good use. She is active as Human Rights worker, sculptor,-with several statues displayed in churches,- portrait painter, poet, music minister and educator of underprivileged children.
She is presently translating her mother’s poems into English (may be viewed at http://www.ChristianPoetry.org,) and is busy with her own poetry, part of which is already released for anthologies and CD’s “The Sound of Poetry”. She is likewise writing her memoirs.
